NSE & BSE — India's exchanges

India has two major stock exchanges: the NSE (National Stock Exchange) and the BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange, Asia's oldest, founded 1875).

What an exchange does

An exchange is a regulated marketplace that matches buyers and sellers, and publishes the resulting prices. Without one, finding someone to trade with — at a fair, transparent price — would be far harder.

NSE vs BSE

Most Indian stocks are listed on both. NSE is larger by trading volume and is the exchange InvestSense's data and this app's coverage are built around — when you see a ticker like RELIANCE here, it's the NSE listing.

Who regulates them

SEBI (the Securities and Exchange Board of India) is the regulator overseeing both exchanges, brokers, and listed companies — roughly India's equivalent of the US SEC. SEBI registration is what distinguishes a legitimate broker or investment adviser from an unregistered one. InvestSense is not SEBI-registered and is not an adviser — see the Disclaimer for the full picture.
